Do you know what Advocaat is?

We have recently released our Advocaat doughnut around the country are people are loving it. However, we keep getting the same question – What actually is Advocaat? This is something that a lot of our Irish market are not familiar with but Polish followers definitely are.

Advocaat is a Dutch liqueur that is very thick, rich and creamy with a yellow colour, very similar to the appearance of custard. It contains egg yolks, sugar, and vanilla and usually a brandy base.

Americans may be more familiar with it as it can be compared to a more boozy version of Eggnog or Eggnog with a twist.

Think of it like a brandy custard. In Ireland we like to try Baileys flavour everything, this is the Dutch equivalent. You can drink it (with a spoon), or use it as a cake filling, or ice cream topping, or why not in a doughnut?

We figured since it’s so much like custard and we love custard doughnuts then why not try an Advocaat doughnut? And it works!

If you look for it, you can actually buy bottles of Advocaat in various off licences such as SuperValu, Molloys and O’Briens Wine.

How To Make Advocaat

Advocaat is actually very straight forward to make. All you need is:

  • 10 egg yolks
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/3 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups brandy (or cognac)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Method:

  • Beat the egg yolks, salt, and sugar until the mixture is thickened.
  • Slowly pour in the brandy while beating.
  • Pour the mixture into a saucepan and warm over low heat while continuously whisking.
  • Make sure it doesn’t boil and let it get nicely thickened.
  • When the mix is thickened and very hot, remove the saucepan from the heat and whisk in the vanilla extract.
  • Allow to cool and store it in the fridge. It will keep there for 3 days.
